TL;DR – No

And you will probably be disqualified if we see you wearing them.

That’s pretty harsh isn’t it?

We get permits for our events from UKA and the BTF – who both have rules over what you can use during races.

BTF Rules (Multi-sport Events)

BTF Rules are really clear –

Illegal Equipment:

Competitors must not use or wear whilst racing:

Headphone(s), headset(s) or technical earplug(s), which are inserted in or covering the ears;

Mobile phones or any other electronic listening communication device;

What happens if I wear them?

In Multisports events, you will be disqualified.

UKA – Running Races

The wearing of headphones, or similar devices, (other than those medically prescribed), is not permitted in races on any single carriageway road that is not wholly closed to traffic. This restriction does not apply to races held on dual carriageways provided that there are clear, structured separations between the separate carriageways. Competition Providers of races held entirely on roads closed to traffic may apply this condition where appropriate to local circumstances.

We have three running events which are held under UKA rules (Winchester 10Km, Romsey 5 and Thruxton 10K.

Winchester 10K

The Winchester 10K is a closed road event. However, Winchester is a busy city and, as happened in the past, a simple wrong turn can place a car slap bang in the middle of the race. In addition emergency services and marshall vehicles have to move around the site so we have chosen to apply this condition.

Thruxton and Romsey 5

Both of these events are completely closed roads, however they are lap based and, at Romsey especially, there are points that marshall instructions are important (e.g. turn around points). We also have medical vehicles that need to get to any point on the course and the only way to get there is by following the course of the race – so again we have chosen to apply this condition.

What happens if I wear them?

Firstly, you will doing so at your own risk. Depending on the conditions we may still allocate you a time, but you will not be placed. If, by wearing the headphones, you are unable to hear a marshalls instruction, or endanger yourself or others you will be disqualified.

Are there any exceptions?

There is an exception under UKA rules:

We do permit Bone Conducting Headphones at our running events such as Aftershokz. However, as with all aspects of the events we reserve the right to disallow them on the day in the event that it affects the safety of the event.
